Is High Speed Broadband Necessary?

While society’s need to access information immediately grows, it is important to remember that broadband connections that operate at excessive speeds may not be the most suitable for personal usage. While businesses certainly benefit from broadband connections with 100MB/s capability, most personal home connections can settle for a bit less.

Many broadband providers push their broadband connections with the highest speed on customers through advertisements stating that these connections will allow for sufficient usage for streaming TV shows and movies. However, most internet content streams at 5MB/s while television streams at less than 10MB/s, so are these high-priced exorbitant speeds really necessary?

Additionally, faster broadband connections do not guarantee faster downloads or quicker access to information. Even if you were to have a high speed broadband connection at home, it is still possible to experience slow download times if you’re downloading from a site that is very remote or simply slow. The performance of the host’s broadband and bandwidth will certainly effect any online interactions with your connection. Many sites that stream web content are optimized to suit slower connections, which are still more common among the household internet realm.

It is possible to have optimal broadband service, even without the highest speed possible. Simply determine how much speed suits your lifestyle. If you do download movies and music regularly, then you could look into a 50MB/s broadband plan, while choosing to download and stream from sites with high speeds to balance out your mid-sized connection. However, if all you do is check your email and chat with friends, look for a less expensive plan that offers exactly what you need.
