It has been a long journey from 29th October 1969 and now celebrating the 40th Birthday. The first data travelled through the ARPNET from Charley Kline in a university at Los Angeles toBill Duvall in a Research institute at Stanford. Later the arpnet networks were joined together and the cluster was known as the internet.

Queen Elizabeth was the first head of a state to invole in networking and also the first head of a state to send an official email in 1976. The year 1990 was considered remarkable when Tim Berness Lee invented the world wide web at the European particle physics laboratory. UK started the first commercial internet in 1992. From dial up to broadband the country has seen many phases of development.

Broadband in UK has been delivered to almost 60 to 70% household till date. Communication through fiber optic cables have made broadband availability more regular and faster. The war to provide faster and low cost broadband service has become severe between the ISP’s in UK. The speed offered in UK ranges between 2Mbps to 20Mbps. Broadband offers are available in plenty and varies depending upon the feasibility and market. The service is offered in several forms such as cable broadband, mobile broadband and satellite broadband.

Mobile broadband and satellite broadband offers a maximum speed of 7 to 8 Mbps. Availability checker can be used to identify the feasibility and broadband offers available in a particluar location. Broadband providers in UK offer different plans depending upon the usage and speed of the connection. PAYG broadband service is also offered for mobile broadband users if the usage is very less.

People in the metropolitian cities catch up with some broadband offers and makes communication faster. Social network these days attracts even the school kids to sign in and join groups. But even after 40 long years of travel, UK lags behind many countries in providing broadband service to all users. There are users who still use dial up or stay without a connection. But the government has promised to provide atleast a minimum of 2 Mbps speed to 80% of the users in the country by 2012.

The broaband providers, researches, and the government of differnet countries continue to invest and research on improving the speed and security of data transmission. All possible methods of transmission are under focus. Even the power lines are tested for data travel, so that people in the remote locations can also get connected to the rest of the world. Future of the internet will be more excited and also frightening. The valuable resource links not just people but also fradulent users, cyber crimes and cyber terrorism. The citizen of UK has to take responsibility to report and to ignore the usage of such sites which can save a billion for the country.
