Controversies around file sharing

Illegal file sharing has been a hot topic since a week now in UK. The government is focusing to provide better broadband service in UK. Broadband offers numerous plans in the form of cable broadband, mobile broadband and satellite services. The broadband providers in UK releases a new plan every day to catch up the hold of more customers and to expand the availability of the broadband service to atleast 80% of users in UK by 2012.

But the numbers would get reversed if offenders are disconnected for repeated file sharing. Broadband providers in UK are upset and reacted for the governments new proposal. TALK TALK mentions that the proposal is likely to breach the fundamental rights of the citizen. Illegal file sharers are a maximum of six million, so alternative methods like legal actions, educating the users and warning letters should be tried out. Also expert hackers can mask their identity or use a different identity to share files in the internet. Identifying file sharers using the IP will not be the best method since users sharing the a web connection will also get offended.

The government officials are also split with different ideas. Many has commented that Lord Mandelson has reached the wrong conclusion. Even if a kid or a teenager downloads a music or a movie illegally from the internet, the entire family will loose the access of the internet connection. But people from the creative industry strongly support the views of Lord Mandelson and consider file sharing to be offensive and would cause severe damage to their growth. A survey states that almost half of the traffic in the UK internet is occupied by the illegally shared contents. The UK government after serious consultation has decided to reduce the problem by 70% and are looking for technical measures to identify the accusers.

Broadband  is seeking every possible ways of development and to serve more customers. There are location which still does not fall under the feasinbility list of the broadband providers. There are people who rely on dial up connections which for communication online. But users having a faster internet access invole in these kinds of illegal access and downloads. The efforts of saving UK’s creative industry is appreciatable but they also have to consider that not all users intentionally download files illegally. There are many users who are not aware of the legal and copyright products available online. So the fear of getting disconnected from the internet would slow down the usage of internet and collapse its future in UK. Having a vast advancement in technology the government has to accept the requests of the users and Broadband providers and come out with an alternative method. Beware! Illegal downloaders…
